In this episode, I talk with Dr. Matthew Bates of Quincy University about two very important books. The first is his brand-new book entitled Why the Gospel, which explores the nature of the Gospel message and why it matters for the church. The second is his provocative 2017 book Salvation by Allegiance Alone, in which he argues that the term ‘faith’ should be understood as allegiance to Jesus as king. We discuss how the Gospel is the announcement of the kingship of Jesus, sealed by his death, resurrection, and ascension, and what it means for Jesus to be king of the world. We then explore how the faith we place in the Gospel should linguistically and historically be understood as allegiance to Jesus as king, which is central to the message of the Gospel, and the practical and theological consequences of this understanding of both ‘Gospel’ and ‘faith’. You won’t want to miss this one!
