Deep dives
Helping Reframe Relationship with Aging
The Modern Elder Academy aims to help individuals shift their perspective on aging from negative to positive. Studies show this mindset shift can add seven and a half years of life. This intervention is more impactful than quitting smoking or starting exercise at age 50. Through workshops and programs, the MEA focuses on making people feel better about aging.
Navigating Midlife Transitions
The MEA assists individuals in navigating various midlife transitions, such as loss, divorce, menopause, career changes, and spiritual awakenings. The program offers a roadmap for understanding and managing these transitions. At MEA, participants explore the shift from ego-focused to soul-centered living, guided by experienced mentors.
Cultivating Purpose and Renewed Sense of Possibility
MEA helps individuals in midlife cultivate purpose and reimagine their possibilities. Many participants are seeking new directions, often realizing previous pursuits no longer align with their authentic desires. The program encourages a shift from pursuing success defined externally to fulfilling purposes that foster personal growth and life satisfaction.
Fostering Wisdom and Intergenerational Collaboration
The program focuses on owning wisdom and shifting from a knowledge-based culture to valuing experiential wisdom. MEA emphasizes the importance of intergenerational collaboration, where insights and knowledge from different age groups are shared and honored. Through rituals and teachings, participants learn to discern and apply wisdom gained from life experience.
Vision for Regenerative Communities and Global Impact
Chip Conley envisions creating regenerative communities through MEA, promoting ecological and social vitality. By transitioning from traditional retirement communities to regenerative living spaces, the focus shifts to sustainability and community connection. The broader vision includes setting a standard for regeneration globally, fostering social impact, and individual transformation.

Chip Conley:
Chip Conley is on a midlife mission. After disrupting the hospitality industry twice, first as the founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality, the second-largest operator of boutique hotels in the U.S., and then as Airbnb’s Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy, leading a worldwide revolution in travel, Conley co-founded MEA (Modern Elder Academy) in January 2018 in Baja California, Mexico. Inspired by his experience of intergenerational mentoring as a ‘modern elder’ at Airbnb, where his guidance was instrumental to the company’s extraordinary transformation from fast-growing start-up to the world’s most valuable hospitality brand, MEA is the world's first ‘midlife wisdom school’ and has a campus opening on a 2,600-acre regenerative horse ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico in April 2024. Dedicated to reframing the concept of aging, MEA supports students to navigate midlife with a renewed sense of purpose and possibility. A New York Times bestselling author, Conley's seventh book "Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better with Age" is about rebranding midlife to help people understand the upside of this often-misunderstood life stage, and gave a 2023 TED talk on the "midlife chrysalis."
