Understanding Learning Disabilities
Learning disabilities are lifelong challenges with learning skills such as reading and writing, which are caused by brain differences and are not related to intelligence. These challenges can impact people at school, work, and everyday life. However, with the right strategies, supports, and teaching approaches, individuals can thrive with learning disabilities.
The Importance of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a legal document that maps out the entire program of special education for a student with learning disabilities. It includes the instruction, support, and services necessary for the student to make progress and have a positive school experience. The IEP allows families to be involved in decisions that impact their child's education and is required by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
Understanding 504 Plans
In some cases, students receive support under a 504 plan instead of an IEP. A 504 plan is not part of special education but is based on two specific requirements: the child must have a disability, which can be a broad range of struggles, and the disability must interfere with the child's ability to learn in a general education classroom. The plan provides accommodations and support to ensure the student's needs are met.
Learning disabilities are real challenges that are not related to intelligence. They impact millions of kids and adults in the United States. And people who have them are not at all “lazy.”
Learning disabilities are caused by differences in the brain. And they often are hereditary. These challenges can impact people at school, at work, and in everyday life. But the good news is there are strategies and supports that can help people with learning disabilities thrive.
