The Importance of Stiffness in the Foot
The foot is built or designed to deal with contextual variability, which means that if you run over an uneven terrain, ground reaction forces come from all directions. And another thing is that it's also designed to store elastic energy when the foot hits the ground. In order to deal with these two functions, so contextual variability and storing elastic energy, there needs to be stiffness in the foot. This stiffness can be created by both passive and active components.
