The Key Players in the Rebellion
There are about 200 major barons in England at this time, and probably two-thirds of them were in rebellion. They would all have brought their own nightly retinues, 10, 20, 30, 40 people. So I think we can think of those still very evocative meadows at runny need by the Thames with lots of tents,. Several thousand people there in rebellion. John might well have had a force of equal size, a lot of it of mercenary captains.
