The Role of Oral Antibiotics in PJI Surgery

A few years ago a randomized clinical trial was published looking at giving oral antibiotics at the time of stage two reimplantation for PJI. They found that doing so did reduce the risk of repeat PJI in that population. In those unfortunate enough to go on and have another infection now it was more likely to be with a resistant organism. So there appears to be a trade-off between reducing the risk of subsequent infection which is important and increasing the chance that that next infection is going to be harder to treat.
