Is the Respiratory System Overbuilt for Capacity?
In most cases, the respiratory system is overbuilt for capacity. But in people who are very well trained, we get something called expiritory flow limitation. This basically occurs when people are ventilating very, very hard. And because of that, we're getting big pressure changes in the air ways. These pressure changes can cause the smooth muscle in the airways to constrict slightly. In athletes, with healthy airways, we see a much, kind of more modest constriction of the airways.
