The History of Botulism
In 1895, nearly 3 dozen people fell ill with botulism after eating pickled ham at a funeral in Belgium. A microbiologist discovered the bacteria Bacillus botulinum and isolated its toxin. Cases of botulism continued to rise as technology to can or preserve food continued to develop into the 20th century. It would take many outbreaks for people to gain an understanding of how to properly prevent botulism from developing.
