The terminating cliche was coined in the early sixties by a psychologist named robert j lifton. It describes a sort of stock expression that's easily memorized and aimed at shutting down independent thinking, or questioning. These phrases are really effective because they alleviate cognitive dissonance. Many clises actually show up in our everyday lives in the form of phrases like, well, boys will be boys.
