The Shame of Being an Immigrant

A lot of the shame that I felt around being an immigrant, where I suddenly was in a place that was very different from my home. English is the second language in Zimbabwe. So at least I came to this country being able to speak the language, but I spoke the language with an accent and didn't even know it. Even my race is not something that I ever had to think about...I just so many things that I wasn't aware of at the age of nine. But now I have this thing called alcohol that I can use to silence it. And then eventually, which I'm sure we'll get into when I got sober is when I had to deal with all of that
