The stakes have to be high in order for people to care. In this book, he's struggling with his own whether or not he's meant to be successful and happy at work. And its his own mental health, if you will. His wife is really frustrated that she and the family have made many sacrifices for him. If there's no stakes, it's really hard to turn the page and want to find out what's going on.
