During Sockty's lifetime the Sophists were very influential but in the Roman Empire there was a resurgence of interest in Greek culture which we call the Second Sophistic. The news media, social media influencers and a more sophisticated way are doing the same thing that the Sophist were doing. Social media works in exactly the same way so people end up in bubbles where they're hearing more and more stuff amplifying their existing prejudices.
