Research on people who've been traumatized is they have emotion focused coping. So if I'm hurt, I focus on fixing my emotions because I can't control anything outside of me. And in order to fix our emotions, we're gonna do stuff like get addicted to substances. It becomes a cycle of increasing problems, followed by worsening emotions and then increased problematic behaviors.
