What Happens in a Depressed Brain?

In the 1970s and 1980s, depression was thought to be caused by a depletion of certain chemicals in the brain. But new research has shown that serotonin and norepinephrine probably don't account for the full biology of depression. The main excitatory system is glutamate, which accounts for something like 90% of the synaptic connections between nerve cells in these higher brain centers.
