Julius Caesar: How to influence an empire

Caesar's Greatest Strength Was Commitment
Julius Caesar's greatest strength throughout his career was the commitment of his army. They loved him, they vouched for him and convinced other soldiers to join him. So how did he do it? Well, he did it with more signaling. He memorized the name of all of his soldiers - this is a simple enough task but can have a big impact on individual team members. Also addressed his army not as soldiers, which was usual throughout the Roman Empire, but as comrades. This address was less hierarchical and made the soldiers feel like Caesar was addressing them as equals. It's surprising to me that modern day armies and police forces haven't applied something similar.
