The History of Work
Bob Greene talks about the past, present and future of work in his new book Time Rich. He says that for 10,000 odd years we were essentially farmers but it wasn't until the 1700s when the Industrial Revolution came along. The eight hour workday was ratified into law with the Fair Labor Standards Act in the United States becoming a law in 1937. In the intervening 83 years, we've held firm to this eight-hour workday even though the nature of work has changed so much.
