There are over 100 neurotransmitters and they can be broken down into several categories. Glutamate is the most abundant amino acid in the diet. Nearly all excitatory neurons in the central nervous system use glutamate as their excitatory neurotransmitter. Most of the other neurotransmitters have functions that are too complex to classify as one or the other.
