CHAPTER

The Importance of Prior Knowledge in Learning

Cognitive load theory allows us to consider both working memory and long-term memory. Prior knowledge is what someone knows prior to any particular learning activity or any instruction given to them so this can influence the way they learn. Older players that have played a longer period of time in a particular club environment may have a much deeper level of longer-term memory than more novice players coming into that environment. An adult can sort of take on seven bits of information but probably only process four of those at a given time meaning there's potential for them to become cognitively overloaded with lots of things going on.
