CHAPTER

Parasympathetic Saturation Is Not Black and White

It's important to keep the context of goals in mind and that leads to another difference between elite and recreational athletes. Parasympathetic saturation would be having decreased heart rate variability despite having a very low resting heart rate which is counterintuitive because typically during the lower your resting heart rate the higher your heart rate variability is. It tends to occur predominantly or I would almost say even exclusively in high level endurance athletes who are undergoing very high volumes of of endurance training. You're more susceptible to it in the supine position simply because you're you're in a more rested or or relaxed state where the heart is not being challenged to overcome gravity to pump blood upwards and and so forth.
