How to Use a Bumper Up Wall to Empower Learners

One of my favorite teaching activities that I've seen other teachers use is called a bumper up wall and it's exactly that you have the four samples usually of work in response to whatever the prompt or activity or question is. Over time as students become more competent and more confident you get them to look at their work against the sample and figure out how they can bump it up. They can annotate the examples as a class as part of that to look at okay why is this sample of a higher standard than the sample before it so they're doing it's mixed with ongoing explicit instruction around things like grammar and punctuation and syntax and all the things that we're concerned with in primary school.
