Introduction
Roger Nielsen coached hockey for over 50 years. At one time or another, he was head coach of 10 different NHL teams. Nowhere in the rule book did it say that a goaltender had to be on the ice during a penalty shot. So whenever a penalty shot was awarded to the other team, Nielsen would pull his goaltender and put a defenseman out there instead.
