I was born in Scotland, but I'm not one of these people that just picks it up. My motivation for learning Spanish is purely to communicate with family and friends. If I don't speak Spanish, I get really rusty. It's useful for me in my coaching and teaching because I can understand how and why people are making mistakes. However, my motivation is very personal.
