The Origin of the English Apostrophe

A few months after john day used those first english apostrophes, another printer named john audley published a pamphlet in which he attempted to define many of the common slang terms. His short manuscript was called the fraternity of vagabonds and it was printed in the year 15 61. The pamphlet is mostly a list of canting or slang terms, together with either short definitions or long explanations. Some scholars consider this text and some similar manuscripts that followed to be early prototypes of modern dictionaries.
