The History of Madeline Blue

Methylene blue is a dye that can be injected into the nervous system of an animal. At low concentrations it becomes trapped for periods of hours inside Madeline Blue and works as a mitochondrial stain. But at higher doses, instead of acting as an electron cycler, it actually replaces oxygen in the tissue. It competes with oxygen and it oxidizes the tissues. We chose this in many preparations to prevent brain degeneration.
