There's so many different mechanisms by which different people might have varying compensation for the same amount of excess energy or an energy deficit. One person might spontaneously start moving around a ton more, not consciously. And that's just one variable among many that can impact the degree to which somebody's weight and body fat trajectory may deviate from what a simple math equation might predict. Some people will respond to an energy deficit and have a reduced amount of non-exercise activity.
