The stroke risk for someone with sick AFib is really similar to that of someone with pre-existing AFib. A Danish group compared atrial fibrillation patients, those that developed it from post-operative non-cardiac surgery and those who just have AF in the community. If you anticoagulate a post-operativeNon-Cardiac Surgery AFib patient and you anticogulate a patient, a community dwelling non-vavular AF Patient, your relative risk of thrombolemblism reduction is similar in both those two groups.
