Aristotle made a great impact on medical authors. Diocles of Caristus was a near-contemporary of Aristotle who emphasized the importance of the four humors. Praxagoras defended a theory about the blood vessels and how they relate to respiration. Even in later authors like Galen, who realized that the arteries contain blood, penuma remains a vital substance.
