As animals get older, there is this increase in the number of these senescent cells. And they're giving off these inflammatory signals which then cause the cells around them to become dysfunctional. Maybe the most potent thing that these inflammatory signals do is cause our stem cells to stop functioning the way they're supposed to. The other consequence of this chronic inflammatory state is an increased risk of cancer.
