Photoreceptors regulate the circadian rhythm, that also regulates when we should be eating. Getting a lot of light before going to bed, but also before you wake up can help people who ordinarily have a really hard time waking up and get up earlier. A common problem for some people is that they desperately want to go to bed early. They're so sleepy all day and right before bed, they're the most alert that they've been all day. That has to do with the timing of their circadian system.
