There was contact in the ancient world between East and West. The most likely candidate is Greek skepticism, that many people have said seems like a Western version of Buddhism. And equally in the East, there's evidence that one of the Buddhist scriptures is called the questions of King Melanda. So it's no surprise that these things have similarities, they're not entirely separate traditions.
