How Do You Plan for Long-Term Goals With Your Athletes?

Long-term planning is challenging and i'm wondering about how you do that in practice with the goal setting. Do you for example write down that in three years i want to achieve this and then you follow up on that or yeah do you have any practical things that you do with with that long-term planning with with your athletes? It's always a question of whether you start with the goals and work backwards from there or you try to figure out that kind of current location that you know physically physiological profile that that athlete has right now.
