We have an overly simplistic folk psychology, like a popular psychology of emotion. It imprisons us in our emotions because we are stupid and naive about the way that emotion works. And I'd say also the internet is awash with self help and self improvement advice. Often it doesn't seem to be helping people. You can't begin doing self improvement or self help as long as you don't understand what emotions even are.
This is the audio of an interview I gave recently for Book Club with Kaiden Kelly, talking about How to Think Like a Roman Emperor, Verissimus, and Stoicism, self-help and modern psychology.
