Getting People to Talk to Strangers

If you get smart designers who know the science, they can set up these really fantastic interventions to get people to do stuff that may not naturally help them feel better. One of my favourite direct interventions is one that comes from Nick Eppley, a professor at the University of Chicago. He's been interested in this phenomenon that he calls under-sociality - we're kind of not as social as we should be if we're trying to promote our happiness. And his study where he shows that this is really powerful is he, he finds commuters on the train.
