Branding - What's That Core Thing?

What is a brand ultimately? Is it a logo or name? Would be more like a reputation, like we ere describing with hins? How do you think about that? I guess i've tended to come at it from the reputation, character, voice, personality angle. They're actually a lot of good and important reasons to have strong brands.
