What Is the Dark Side?

In a market culture, we're incentivized to act kindly, pro socially. But it's harder to understand the motives behind their actions if they have an ulterior motive. There is abundant evidence that when you can ascribe someone's prosocial action to a selfish motive, you don't actually feel closer to them. And so market cultures can put us in this weird position where we're incentivised to act kindly but unsure why anybody's acting kindly.
