There needs to be from the leader's perspective, self-awareness that you're triggered to start with. We are busy in our own head thinking how it relates to me or we're listening to respond and not listen to understand. So if you really want to engage in some cognitive empathy, you really have to sit with the person and imagine what that situation is like for them. Then of course is the empathic action that you take.
