Plato's criticism of the problems of democracy, they seem pretty straightforward. The idea that unchecked rule of the majority can cause problems is central to even our own version of democracy. Some people take it very seriously as explicitly what he means; others go a full ironic route and say something in between. It's meant to be a metaphor for justice in the soul or somewhere in between.
