The Effect of Smartphone Presence on Cognitive Performance
The presence of your smartphone could decrease your cognitive performance from memory by about 7% or something like that. I encourage people during those peak periods, it's not just that switching off notifications, actually put your phone out of sight. Don't create a necessary time pressure. Don't switch if you don't need to. And accept that the most complex work is probably going to be most effectively done during those periods in the day that you feel able to sustain your attention and work with your biology rather than against it.
