When your shift ended you had to give up your bed to someone else. This way the bed never got cold. And although jobs were plentiful working conditions were even more hazardous than living conditions. Wages could barely get you clothed and fed. Under these crowded malnutrition and poor conditions to bring tuberculosis flourished.
