The Language of Faith

"Bible-ish" is a new book about how the Bible enters culture and then creates a vocabulary for faith. The first generation of Bible readers encounters things in the Bible that are strange and fresh. But when these become normal and then people just take them after a while to be biblical, it's called sacralization. And then there's a third linguistic phenomenon which I mentioned called defamiliarization - the need to re-encounter the Bible in its freshness. So these are just linguistic phenomena that I try to trace in Bible translation in general so that we might be able to see how Bible translation shapes the way we do theology.
