Dr. Coleman: I wish I could say that it was trending in that direction from what I see. But to me, it seems like we're getting more and more atomized,. Many of the things that caused estrangement are fixable. Well, I thought that branching out from strict political topics might make for a more inspiring conversation but clearly I chose the wrong topic. It certainly taught me a lot in this incredibly informative interview.

Joshua Coleman is a psychologist and senior fellow at the Council on Contemporary Families. He is the author of Rules of Estrangement: Why Adult Children Cut Ties and How to Heal the Conflict.
