We have inner and outer cues that can send us into a state of sympathetic activation. We need to shift if danger is really coming, or we might even shut down and freeze as a dorsal response. These cues sometimes are just little cues, and they're not actually dangerous, but our system is remembering them as dangerous. You could be feeling safe, and you shift into a place of fight or flight because this person's not really with me.
