Are We Driven by Self-Interest?

In Adam Smith's proposition, the best way to get people to act kindly is to align it with self-interest. And I think that's been a pretty standard perception in economics ever since. But if we create a set of structures around people that assume they're driven by self-interest, then they'll look around and say, well, this society looks like it's set up for a bunch of really selfish people.
