The Effects of Sugars on Energy Balance

Sugar is processed into other nutrients such as fibre and vitamins. Athletes on an energy budget need to be selective about what they eat. Foods that tend to be low in free sugars are probably going to be higher in some of those other nutrients we need. You can more easily get away with a higher sugar diet if you've got a higher energy budget.
