Taiwan's defense spending has increased by about 35% over the past six years alone which is quite fast for democratic society. The U.S. have a pretty strong control civilian control of our military and ultimately the budgets are being decided by the civilians in the Pentagon with advice obviously from the military. I don't think there's any serious Taiwanese person that is in charge of our national security or foreign affairs that realistically believes that this is an obligation of the US to help, he says.
