When banks make a loan, they are creating money in the borrower's bank account. The Irish banking strike of the 1970s is famous among banking nerds. But how did publicans cope? They knew their communities very well and were able to predict whether there was money in an account or not. So I can understand the problem of paying for a pint of Guinness - but how does that keep the whole system working?
