Psychologist Michael Thomasello calls toddlers indiscriminate altruists. 49% of two-year-olds will comfort them in some way, according to his research. It's not just about reciprocity and thinking, oh, well, if I help the adult, they'll be nice to me and they might give me something good. They want to become more discriminating in who they help as they get a bit older.
