WHAT IS POLITICS?

CHAPTER

The Conflict Between Hierarchy and Democracy

In inhierarchical societies, self worth is generally tied to accepting one's place in a hierarchy. That's literally what separates adults from children. And then you try to crush those people whom you see as savages who need correction,. Much like you, as a child, needed to be crushed in order to accept hierarchy. The reaction that you will have will depend on how logically and materially invested you are in the hierachical system. If you're at the top of a hirarchy without these benefits, you probably don't feel part of this other culture. So if you want equality about your wife or your servants, you can't have that ideas about equality.
