The Battle of Hastings
William the Conqueror was crowned as King William I on Christmas Day 1066. He marched his army to London and had himself crowned in Westminster Abbey. Some Norman Knights decided to celebrate their victory by burning down bits of Westminster, which is not at all Christmassy. Even though the battle of Hastings happened almost a thousand years ago, we can still see its consequences today.
