Do You Know the Rules Before You Can Break Them?
It's almost definitely true that you have a lot more in common with somebody else than you think you do. The distinction you're making between differentiation and competitive analysis is a various student one. Figure out what is the minimum viable product of the thing you're doing and then worry about differentiating because no one's going to use you if you're bad to begin with.
